Patient Education

Denture Homecare strongly believes that one of the most important steps in a successful completion of a treatment plan is patient education.

Once the treatment plan is completed, it is very important for the patient to know what to expect with the dentures as they will be using the prosthetic for the next 5-7 years.

We go over Hygiene with the patient or the facility that the patient is located to ensure longevity of oral health as well as the prosthetic.

What is needed to clean your dentures? How many Steps does it take to clean dentures?

Those are two frequently asked questions amongst care providers and denture wearers. It takes 4 simple steps to clean your dentures daily.

Step one:

Get your essentials ready.

1. A denture brush

2. Non abrasive liquid soap

3. Denture bath container

4. Medium size hand towel. If you don't have a towel we have a solution for you in step two.

Step two:

Place a towel lining the sink or fill up the sink with water half way up the sink bowl to avoid breaking the denture if it happens to slip out of your hands. Filling up the sink or lining the sink with a towel will absorb the hit/shock and prevent the denture from cracking.

Step three:

Rinse the denture under the sink to take off any visible debris. Then brush your dentures with a denture brush using non abrasive liquid soap.

You could use toothpaste but remember that toothpaste is meant for enamel which is stronger than acrylic. With toothpaste  having small abrasive particles meant for enamel could overtime "sand" away the beautiful anatomy of the teeth and gums making the denture look more dull.

Step four:

Rinse the dentures under room temp water to wash off all the cleaning agent. Once the dentures are 100% clean, place them inside your denture bath with clean room temp water. The water in the denture bath must be replaced daily.

Denture Relining

What else is expected with Dentures?

With complete dentures bone resorption is expected. We usually give it about 1.5 - 2.5 years before we recall the patient for relining of the denture. What is a reline? Relining a denture is filling in the gaps between the denture base and resorbed tissue with impression material to refit and maximize the retention and stability of the denture.

When else could you expect bone resorption?

You could expect bone resorption to also occur with immediate dentures. What is an immediate denture? An immediate denture is a denture that is placed in the mouth the same day as the teeth get extracted. That means you do not have to go a day without teeth. Immediate dentures also help with tissue healing and bone contour during the healing stage of the treatment.
